If you wish to take a boat trip to Staffa you will need an overnight stay on Mull, ideally Fionnphort, because of the time required to make the journey. It is essential to book your boat trip, there are refunds if the trip is cancelled due to bad weather. The weather is seldom bad for two days in a row, so if Staffa is a main highlight, it is best to book at least two nights accommodation to allow the opportunity to have a good weather window. A trip to Staffa is well worth it – it is a unique sea adventure with the chance of spotting seals, porpoises, dolphins, basking sharks and even occasionally, whales en route. The sight of the awesome grandeur of the cliffs on approaching the island is breathtaking, and once ashore, the beauty and drama of Fingal’s Cave is awe-inspiring. Another great attraction of the island is the sheer numbers, variety and accessibility of birdlife that nests on Staffa from late April to early August, with puffins everyone’s favourite. Bring warm, waterproof clothing for the boat trip as it can get chilly at sea, even when the weather is warm and sunny.
