David Balfour’s Bay (Traigh Gheal) is a remote and beautiful sandy bay in a stunning setting, located on the tidal Isle of Erraid on the south west side of the island. To reach the bay requires a walk across Erraid from Knockvologan Beach at low tide. David Balfour’s Bay, edged with pink granite, is named after the character David Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Kidnapped”. This is an adventurous but very scenic walk and can be extended to explore the north side of Erraid where there are magnificent views of the turquoise waters of the Sound of Iona and to Iona itself. On a clear day, access the higher ground for of Burg and Ben More and north to the Rum Cuillin. Although you may be tempted to linger, remember Erraid is tidal so return to Knockvologan in good time to beat the tide.
