Traigh Ghael: If you want to experience a slice of a natural heaven, try Traigh Gheal beach, accessed through the Tireragan Nature Reserve. The walk, which starts at Knockvologan, is also of the most challenging on the Ross of Mull as the terrain is rough and can be very boggy. However, with the exceptional dry weather for the past two months, this is a great time to take the walk to Triagh Gheal as the going is easier as it is less wet underfoot. To reach the beach is a 2 - 3 hour hike through the reserve, but you may wish to allow more time to explore and observe, as this is an exceptional regenerating habitat of natural woodland with optional detours to catch magnificent views and visit evocative abandoned settlements. The beach itself is stunningly beautiful, possibly the most attractive beach on Mull. The return journey is the same route. The Tireragan Estate is managed by a charity called Highland Renewal.
The photos in the gallery below were taken on a walk in June. The reserve and the beach were alive with wildlife from butterflies and dragonflies to deer, hen harriers (eight sightings) and shorebirds nesting on the beach and machair (so take care where you step and don’t approach too near). We are happy to give as detailed advice and help to our guests as is required to help them get the most out of this outstanding walk.
